No Age Banding

  • Age banding is when an insurance company chooses to increase your premium costs every 5 or 10 years due to age. SMRA does not have age banding. It doesn’t matter if you're applying as a 55-year-old or a 95-year-old, you pay the same price.

  • Note: SMRA still experiences the same pressures that all other plans do,  such as inflation, rising drug costs, increased administration requirements, claims, and insurance costs, but we do not experience jumps in premium due to age banding. This should save you money in the long run and stabilized the price as you age. We currently average 3.5% increase in premium per year.

Plan Design Flexibility

  • We understand that your health insurance needs change as you age. That's why we decided to allow your benefits to change with you. Every 2 years on the plan, you have the option to move up or down one plan level. That way you are not stuck with one plan for the rest of your life.

  • Unlike many others, SMRA's drug plan covers both formulary and non-formulary drugs, giving you more coverage.

Future Enhancements Are Available To All Members

  • All plan enhancements are applicable to all existing members, so everyone gets to benefit from our ingenuity and commitment to making our plans the best they can be.

You Don't Have To Be Retired To Join Our Plans

  • If you age out of your current employer sponsored benefit plan and continue to work, you can join our plan.

We Work With Individuals With Bridging Options

  • If your employer allows you to take advantage of a bridging option, we will allow you to start your benefits with us after the bridging is complete. This insures you do not have to double up on payments.

Simple Qualification Requirements

  • There is only one requirement to qualify for our plans. As long as you sign-on within 60 days past your retirement date, or your last day of benefits (the latter of), you qualify.

We Value Your Input

  • We welcome input from all our members. Any plan design changes go through our selection process, which includes a feasibility test, and a majority vote by our board members. Any changes are implemented during renewal each year.
